Style plays a part in each of these aspects.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Louvers are a vital part of the building’s exterior. You will need louvers at key points along the façade, although you can add them to any element of the design for a louvered look. With the right design, louvers can add to the style of your building.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Louver Types – Function vs Style\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>The main function of a louver is protecting ventilation points. Most louvers guard against rainfall, allowing air through the spaces between their blades while blocking the rain. Severe weather louvers can capture water blown in with the airflow. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cfigure class=\"image\">\u003Cimg style=\"aspect-ratio:800\u002F485;\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fawv-cdn.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\u002Fblog\u002F_transforms\u002F_blogPost\u002F12678\u002FAWV-2026-Louver-Style-Guide-Louvers.webp?transformId=1579\" alt=\"Two louvers of different colors\" width=\"800\" height=\"485\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003Cp>Extreme weather louvers are built for resisting incoming rainfall and potential strikes from windborne debris. We have several articles that cover the various types of louvers and what they do. In this article, we are focused on style.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Thin-line louvers can provide style to walls and other surfaces, creating a straight-line aesthetic that can point to other forms. These louvers are lighter than other louver types, with frames that are typically between 1- and 2-inches deep. They can be easily mounted to walls or installed along openings with relatively little support. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In some cases, a thin-line louver can provide the same level of protection as a full-sized louver. The exact performance will come down to testing. This is why you should carefully review a louver’s test data when deciding on the right louvers for your project.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Grilles are similar in construction, but they do not provide any level of protection. However, they do have additional options for customization and configuration.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Color\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Color is an important consideration. Do you want your louvers to stand out from other elements on the wall, or should they blend in? You can use louvers to draw attention to more important features by using colors that contrast with the surrounding elements.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Aluminum louvers have several options for color. Paints can be applied as a standard wet coat or as a dry powder. The porous surface of extruded aluminum provides the perfect medium for bonding with the paint. At AWV, we specialize in wet paints. This creates a burnished look. You can also add dye to the process to add color to the finished product. Apply a clear coat to any of these options and add a shine to the paint, while also adding to its resilience.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>These finishes will not affect the louver’s performance. This means that your required louvers can add to the building’s style. Add paint finishes to help all of your louvers stand out or blend in.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Steel louvers are a bit more limited in their options, but you can still add color. Steel louvers can receive wet paint finishes, although it will need more frequent touch ups to keep its color. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Many manufacturers will offer color matching with their finishes, so that the finished product matches your design. We want the finished product to match your designs.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Shapes – Squares, Circles, and Triangles\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Squares and rectangles are common in building design. Louvers are squares and rectangles by default. However, there may be places in your design that need a different shape. For example, you may have a circular opening in a wall that needs a louver. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cfigure class=\"image\">\u003Cimg style=\"aspect-ratio:800\u002F476;\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fawv-cdn.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\u002Fblog\u002F_transforms\u002F_blogPost\u002F12675\u002FAWV-2026-Louver-Style-Guide-Custom-Shapes.webp?transformId=1580\" alt=\"A triangular louver beside an arched louver\" width=\"800\" height=\"476\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003Cp>This is where custom shapes come in. Custom shapes refer to louvers that are any shape other than a square or rectangle. We mentioned circles in our example, but you can also design an oval-shaped louver or a triangular louver. These aren’t the only shapes you can choose from. A rounded arch can help fill in the space of an archway opening, providing full coverage from top to bottom. You can also cover a diamond shape by combining triangular louvers. Custom shapes open the possibilities for new and unique designs.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>However, there are limitations to this option. Only square and rectangular louvers are tested under AMCA’s standards. That means that important weather ratings, like wind driven rain rejection, will not carry over to the custom-shaped version of the louver. A hurricane louver will not meet your project’s requirements as a custom shape.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>If you have non-standard openings in your building’s façade, then consider adding custom shape louvers for a touch of style.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Additional Options – Flanges and Screens\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>If you’re going for a seamless look, consider adding a flange frame to your louvers. When you install a louver in an opening, you create a visible division between the wall and the louver. A flange frame can cover that divide. Flanges extend out from the louvers frame, along the surface of the wall. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Think of it like a cover for the seams of the opening. This can make louver feel like it’s a part of the façade. Paint your bird screen for a nice contrast between the interior and exterior of the louver. Or have it blend in. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Insect screens should stay unpainted.
