Ready to test your louver design skills?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Application 1: Opening in a wall to a private area\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>Your building has a wall opening that leads to a break area. The opening is meant to provide passive ventilation into the space, so that employees can have fresh air on their break. The occupants inside this space should have privacy. They allow air into the space so that employees receive fresh air from outside. Grilles won’t have the blade features for capturing water, but they can still deflect rainfall depending on their designs. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>They can also block sightlines through the opening. Add a grille to this opening in the style you prefer. Grilles provide everything you need in this scenario, plus they add a touch of that louvered style to the façade.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>For Application 2: Wind driven rain louver\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>You might be confused by this answer. A hurricane louver provides advanced protection from severe weather, right?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cfigure class=\"image\">\u003Cimg style=\"aspect-ratio:800\u002F584;\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fawv-cdn.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\u002Fblog\u002F_transforms\u002F_blogPost\u002F12792\u002FAWV-Blog-2026-Which-Works-Best-Louvers-WDR.webp?transformId=1944\" alt=\"Illustration of a wind driven rain louver highlighted as the correct answer\" width=\"800\" height=\"584\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003Cp>They are tested to more stringent requirements, including missile impact testing and hurricane force wind driven rain. Standard wind driven rain louvers also protect against severe weather, but not to the same degree. Why would you choose the lesser of the two?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>For this opening, you will use a wind driven rain louver because there is no specific need for a hurricane louver. The main point here is the requirements. The scenario calls for a severe weather louver. It does not call for hurricane protection. An application will call for a specific requirement for hurricane protection, like a listing AMCA 540 or AMCA 550. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Hurricane louvers may be tested to a higher standard, but they don’t always fit the requirement. These louvers are built for protection first. Considerations like airflow efficiency are secondary. Hurricane louvers typically have less free area than similar louvers, because they have more protective features. Overprotecting an opening may keep rain out, but it can be more costly to install and puts excess strain on your HVAC system. Choose the louver that fits the requirements. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>For Application 3: Penthouse\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>You may have the idea to close off the roof opening when it isn’t in use. The adjustable louver would close its blades and prevent water falling into the opening. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cfigure class=\"image\">\u003Cimg style=\"aspect-ratio:800\u002F429;\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fawv-cdn.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\u002Fblog\u002F_transforms\u002F_blogPost\u002F12790\u002FAWV-Blog-2026-Which-Works-Best-Louvers-Penthouse.webp?transformId=1945\" alt=\"Image of a penthouse highlighted as the correct answer\" width=\"800\" height=\"429\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003Cp>That won’t work. If the blades do capture rain, the water will fall into the opening when the louver opens. It could also seep in through the closed blades. Adjustable louvers work best when mounted vertically. They are designed to deflect rainfall when open, so that rain falls off the blades and away from the interior of the opening. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>For a rooftop opening, use a penthouse louver. Penthouses are assemblies with four walls and a roof. The roof panels are slanted so that rain slides off. You can add louvered panels to each side of the penthouse, so that the system can draw air into the opening. These louvers will also deflect rain and protect the opening from water damage. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>This scenario needs a penthouse with at least one louvered panel. You can customize the penthouse to match surrounding elements, or have it stand out on the roof. Consider the requirements of each application and choose the louver that best meets them. Don’t overprotect an opening with a heavy-duty louver.
